Dr. Leffell is also Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Activites and Strategic Planning and Director of the Yale Medical Group. Dr. Leffell was born in Montreal, Canada in 1956 and was educated at Yale, McGill, Cornell and the University of Michigan. Although board certified in both internal medicine and dermatology, Dr. Leffell has been a leader in the development of the relatively new field of dermatologic surgery. His expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer and facial rejuvenation form the foundation of Dr. Leffell's practice. Dr. Leffell specializes as well in Mohs surgery, a method of skin cancer removal, and plastic reconstruction [Yale Dermatology Website]. Complementing Dr. Leffell's private surgical practice is his academic research and teaching. He is a world-recognized authority in several areas including new technologies, anti-aging, laser and skin cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention. He developed the Yale Skin Cancer Detection Program and has published a variety of reports on preventative health in dermatology. Through corporate-sponsored skin cancer screenings, Dr. Leffell has sought to bring the importance of early melanoma diagnosis to the attention of industry. In the field of laser technology, while still in training, Dr. Leffell developed and patented a laser method for measuring the aging of skin [Read the Patent]. Other areas of research in which Dr. Leffell leads an active team include wound healing and aging. Most recently Dr. Leffell's interest in anti-aging has been highlighted by clinical research trials into a new non-laser technique for wrinkle removal [Visage]. In addition, important research takes place under his direction in the areas of cancer therapy. Through close collaboration with industry the Yale Section of Dermatologic Surgery & Cutaneous Oncology, of which Dr. Leffell is Chief, has led to innovations that have improved the healing process for many patients. It is in the area of skin cancer research that Dr. Leffell and his collaborators have made exciting scientific progress. Together with other investigators at Yale, Dr. Leffell has helped identify the genetic basis of thecancer-causing ultraviolet rays of the sun (Scientific). This work, which represents the first time that an environmental agent has been directly linked to a genetic injury that causes cancer is detailed in the June, 1996 issue of Scientific American. Also with colleagues at Yale, Dr. Leffell participated in discovering a new cancer gene for an inherited form of skin cancer which promises to prove helpful in developing non-surgical treatments for skin cancer. As a professor at Yale, Dr. Leffell has trained dozens of dermatologists, including those with special expertise in surgery. Dr. Leffell is the author of Manual of Skin Surgery (Amazon.com) and scores of book chapters. In college he edited the Insiders' Guide to the Colleges (Yale Daily News). Most recently, Dr. Leffell authored TOTAL SKIN: The Definitive Guide To Whole Skin Care For Life which will be published by Hyperion in May 2000. Aside from his clinical practice and research in dermatology, Dr. Leffell oversees the Yale Medical Group.
